Best Cities in The U.S. for Hunting
As hunters, there is no better thrill than the chase and rush of getting a big buck. Sometimes, we find that traveling around for the best hunting offers us the adrenaline rush of experiencing a new encounter. If you’ve never traveled to hunt, check out this blog as you’ll find a new place on your bucket list.
Plus, since it’s finally that time again, you might be wondering where the best hunting is. If you’re an avid hunter, you’ve probably heard of or visited some of the places that we will discuss below. If you’ve visited, let us know how your trip was in the comments below. We’d love to hear from you! Please note that they are not in any particular order, and the best hunting really depends on where you enjoy going. You’ll probably love each place for different reasons and ultimately decide on your favorite.
- Venice, LA
As you probably know, Venice ranks high on many outdoorsmen lists. This tiny community at the mouth of the Mississippi River is perfect for those that live to hunt and fish. In fact, in 2011 competitors for the Bassmaster Classic ran down the Mississippi from New Orleans to Venice. Which, if you were wondering, is more than two hours by boat. But, it contains world-class redfish and speckled trout. Obviously, drawing the recreational fishermen. Therefore, you will catch fish every day here, and you can’t say that about many other places.
You’re probably familiar with Venice due to its importance in Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. However, it’s still a great place for fishing and hunting waterfowl. The beginning of teal season is the start of september. This part of the country makes up for 14% of the country’s wetlands.
- Appleton, WI
Many trappers and fur traders settled into the town of Appleton after the promise of lucrative beaver pelts up the Fox River. However, huge whitetail deer bring in many avid outdoorsmen to the Fox River Valley. In fact, Wisconsin has recently been anointed with the number-one trophy whitetail state in the country. Hunters logged 383 entries in the last five years. Just in the last few seasons, there have been three different bucks killed that either broke or threatened the state’s records. However, you can experience Appleton further than a treestand.
There are many fisheries in the state. You can travel to Green Bay in 30 minutes or less, and it offers great bass and muskie fishing in the country. Plus, 70 miles south in the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area offers the largest freshwater cattail in the country. You’ll find hundreds of thousands of geese in this region due to migration. In the 661,000 acre Nicolet National Forest, contains deer, bears, and grouse, and a true wild place in the northwoods.
- Salt Lake City, UT
Home of some of the largest mule deer bucks, making it highly rated on our charts for places to hunt. Plus, the Green River offers amazing fly fishing for trout and kokanee salmon. Along the Pacific Flyway waterfowl like teal and tundra swans are highly common. Deer hunting in Salt Lake City is rampant and a big business. However, be aware that there are no whitetail deer in Utah. So if you’re looking to hunt that, don’t come here. You might spot a couple here and there due to neighboring states and such. But, nothing that will really leave it’s mark where whitetail is concerned.
- Salmon, ID
As referenced by the name, this town is the perfect place for the outdoor enthusiast. It’s located directly on the Salmon River, which borders millions of acres of public hunting ground. This includes the largest wilderness area in the Lower 48. You’ll find world-class fishing for trout, steelhead, and other species year-round. Additionally, there is a big-game scene in Salmon. You can find trophy elk, mule deer, and whitetail in this area. Hunting for bears and mountain lions is also top in the country. To put it simply, you can’t go wrong when hunting or fishing in Salmon.
- Anywhere, MT
As every hunter knows, Montana is a dream for hunting. It’s the fourth largest state in the United States. Montana has a known reputation of being one of the best states to hunt and find game in America. Due to its mountainous terrain, the state is divided with a major range in the west and prairie land in the east. There are opportunities to hunt for black bear, white-tailed deer, mule deer, moose, mountain goats, etc. You’ll be able to find the best variety between August and November. Plus, you’ll have opportunities to hunt for upland birds and waterfowl in the majority of the state. Therefore, you can hunt any day of the week.
- Denver, CO
Colorado is known for it’s beautiful mountainous ranges and boundless supply of nature. But, as you can probably imagine they’re home to a diverse group of wildlife. This is especially true if you’re looking for a solid elk hunt. Colorado sits an average of 3,200 feet above sea-level, so make sure you’re prepared for this climate. You can also find part of the Rocky Mountains in the western side of the state. Therefore, there’s tons of habitats for elk, so the population is extremely high there. Keep in mind, there is definitely other game to hunt in the beautiful state. You’ll find white-tailed deer, mule deer, moose, mountain goats, mountain lions, and black bears while you’re visiting.

To conclude, the United States is packed full of wildlife and nature as you’ve been able to tell in the above. Many outdoorsmen have other countries and climates on their bucket list for a hunt. However, it’s important that we don’t neglect the wildlife here in the states, as well.
