The Crankbait

The first being a crankbait. A crankbait on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake has probably caught more fish throughout the years of bass fishing and tournament bass fishing. It’s one of the most versatile baits that an angler will ever pick up. Crankbaits today are offered in a multitude of different colors, styles, sizes, and really everything else in between. The crankbaits on the market today are endless, and each year with ICast more companies are just coming out with more and more variations of crankbaits. For the springtime fishing on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake, anglers will want to pick up a medium diving crankbait and a shad pattern. This is probably the most generic crankbait style and color that there is out there on the market. However, it still produces not only quality bites but quantity of bites as well throughout the day of fishing. Anglers who just want to drop the trolling motor and run as much shoreline on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake in the springtime as they can in order to search for fish relating shallow on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake, can be very effective with throwing a medium diving crankbait. When we say medium diving, we are talking about any crankbait that runs between 4 and 12 feet of water. Anglers will want to be bumping the crankbait off the bottom because this time of year, in the springtime, fish are relating up shallow or on the rocks. Anglers will want to parallel the bank with their boat and make multiple casts running down the bank.

Tip: How to Cover More Water Effectively

A good tip when an angler is running down the bank on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake, they don’t necessarily want to make overlapping casts, but they constantly want to be on the trolling motor and find a good variable speed to where they make one cast and by the time they reel the crankbait to the boat, they have caught up to the position to where they made that previous cast. Meaning that the front deck of the boat by the time they reel the crankbait in, is where their last cast landed with the crankbait. This is just a great way to cover a lot of water and be very effective. Anglers will want to run main-lake points, secondary points, go all the way back up into the pockets and creeks, and even fish the main-lake bluff walls. The key here is to remember where they are getting bites, once they establish a pattern of the specific area, they are getting bites with a crankbait, then they’ve eliminated a bunch of water and they can zone in on those specific areas throughout the entire lake. This just maximizes their efficiency and knowing exactly where the fish are holding.

The Finesse Jig

But why should a bass angler on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake also put a finesse jig on the deck of their boat? This is simply to break down more of the structure and cover that the fish are relating to in the springtime and up shallow in Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. If an angler is going down the bank with a crankbait and comes upon a stump, a piece of brush, a tree laydown, or even a dock; this is where picking up the jig can really be effective. Fish are always going to relate to wood that is on the bank in the springtime on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. 99% of the time, when an angler is going down the bank with a crankbait, and they see a piece of wood they can pick up a jig and really slow down and pick that piece of wood a part and generally pick up a few extra bites throughout the day.

Sometimes this is when anglers will catch their big bite throughout the day, is with that finesse jig on wood. Even though the wood may not be visible on the docks, many dock owners on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake have sunk brush piles down below the dock to hold Crappie. And although there is Crappie down there, Largemouth Bass on Kentucky Lake will get on these brush piles also. There’s no specific kind of finesse jig that an angler should choose, a jig between 1/4oz and a 1/2oz with a green pumpkin and brown skirt is perfect for throwing in the springtime on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. Anglers will want to have a craw style trailer on the back of the finesse jig in the same matching colors of brown or green pumpkin. One tip that anglers can do that increase their bites on Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake in the springtime, is to dip the pinchers of the craw trailer into a little bit of orange dye.

So when fishing Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake in the springtime and preparing for upcoming tournaments. Anglers can do a lot of damage when fishing a medium diving crankbait and a finesse jig. These are two tools that serve as great search baits and can help anglers locate where the Largemouth Bass are, and break it down even further from there for the tournament.
