Selecting the Perfect Bait
Bait selection on Lake Guntersville is up to the angler, and it’s hard to choose anything wrong. Anglers have caught largemouth bass doing numerous of different patterns throughout the years. Anglers who like to throw jigs, swimbaits, big spoons, Alabama rigs, big spinner baits, and lipless crank baits; can find themselves catching a lot of fish throughout a day on the water. Some anglers can even lock one bait into their hand, cover a great amount of water, and catch a lot of fish. The lipless crankbaits and swimbaits are probably the most notorious pre-spawn baits for Lake Guntersville. Shad patterns and crawfish patterns are a great way to go on Lake Guntersville. Many angles like to mix it up throwing a shad pattern in one part of the lake, and a crawfish pattern and the other part of the lake. Lake Guntersville has a great population of shad, and crawfish. Shad in Lake Guntersville are known to grow up to eight, and sometimes even 10 inches long. This is why the largemouth bass in lake Guntersville grow to be so big, they are eating big bait. Anglers think about big magnum spoons, big deep diving crankbaits, 1 ounce to 2 ounce swimbaits, the Alabama rig, and big 1 to 1 1/2 ounce jigs; all of these baits really became famous on Lake Guntersville. For lipless crankbaits a ¾ ounce and a 1 ounce started to really gain their popularity from tournaments fished on Lake Guntersville. Anglers can also catch fish in the pre-spawn and late winter on bladed jigs, and medium diving crankbaits.Â
Winter Patterns
The best patterns on Lake Guntersville in the pre-spawn in late winter for catching big largemouth bass relate to the bridges and areas close to spawning flats. The bridges on Lake Guntersville on notorious for holding big largemouth bass. Often during tournaments, you will see a congregation of boats around the bridges all day long. Fish relate to these, especially when there is current ripping through the pilings. Fish are there because they’re waiting on an easy meal. When the shad in the lake get too cold, they often get caught up in the current flowing through the river channel. This makes for an easy meal to the largemouth bass in Lake Guntersville. They were holed up in the bridge pilings and just wait for a meal to come floating by them. This is why a lot of anglers fish with reaction baits such as swimbaits, lipless crankbaits, Alabama rigs, and other swimming style hard baits around bridges. The timing is probably the most difficult part when fishing the bridges on Lake Guntersville. There will be high feeding times and low feeding times. This again is based on current, the weather, how cold the water is, whether it’s a cloudy or sunny day, and of course the moon phase. But ultimately the water temperature is going to be a little bit higher around these areas because all the bridges on Lake Guntersville have a tremendous amount of riprap. The riprap holds heat and will always be a few degrees warmer. Â

It’s full of big largemouth bass and will continue to be one of the best bass fishing lakes in the country for years to come.
